# Lineage roster v2: the review pack
Every field of the 36-voice contributors roster with the source it rests on, the verse that proves each pen-name, and the questions for the scholar (gate G3).
- Page:
- Updated: 2026-10-24
- From the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji — Knowledge Base wiki. Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is quoted verbatim, cited by Ang, and never altered.
---
This pack is for the scholar who signs gate G3. It sets out the 36-voice roster that the website's
Lineage page and the app's *Voices of the Granth* read (`frontend/public/contributors.json`), field by
field, with the source behind each one. It is presentation data: it never alters the scripture, and every
count and Ang on screen comes from the database, not from here. Status today: 36 draft.
## How the facts were chosen
1. **The Granth itself first.** Pen-names (*chhap*), the verse that shows each one, and the named Banis
(by `comp_id`) are read from this project's verbatim corpus; `tools/check_contributors.py` re-proves
them against the pinned database on every pull request.
2. **Life facts only from tier-2 sources**, named on every row:
- **EoS** — The Encyclopaedia of Sikhism, ed. Harbans Singh (Punjabi University, Patiala, 1992–98) (https://eos.learnpunjabi.org/). eos.learnpunjabi.org returned HTTP 522 on 2026-10-23; entries were read from Internet Archive snapshots of the same pages (each entry's url).
- **Darpan** — Prof. Sahib Singh, Sri Guru Granth Sahib Darpan (https://www.gurugranthdarpan.net/)
- **SGGS** — Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, this project's verbatim corpus (db/sggs.sqlite). Pen-names, example lines and notable Banis are read from the corpus by line id and comp_id.
3. **Wikipedia, SikhiWiki and the ShabadOS writer field are for discovery only** and are never cited.
4. **Never invent a date or a place.** A field no source supports is left blank, and its *Dates note*
says why. *c.* marks an uncertain date; *fl.* gives the century a voice is known from, and is used
only to order the timeline.
5. **Where sources differ, the entry says so**, in the *Where sources differ* line.
Map pins are approximate. They sit on an equirectangular box over north and west India
(longitude 66.0–90.0°E, latitude 8.0–37.0°N),
and each one names a town that a source ties to the voice.
## How to sign
For each voice, correct anything wrong (in the JSON or on this page), then set its `review` to
`{"status": "approved", "reviewer": "", "date": "YYYY-MM-DD"}`. The App Store build runs
`python3 tools/check_contributors.py --channel appstore`, which refuses any entry that is not approved.
TestFlight shows a *Context pending scholarly review* label in the meantime.
## Questions for the scholar
- **How many Bhatts?** Sahib Singh and Teja Singh count 11; Santokh Singh and Bhai Vir Singh count 17;
Kartar Singh Dakha counts 19 (EoS, Bhatt Bani). The roster follows the corpus's 11 names plus a
collective entry for unattributed Swaiyye lines. Should the 17-count names (Tal, Jalan, Das, Sevak,
Parmanand the Bhatt) be shown, and under which of the 11? Kalsahar's verses also sign `ਟਲ`, which the
17-count treats as Bhatt Tal.
- **Bhai Mardana.** The EoS credits him with one salok at Ang 553. Sahib Singh (Darpan, Ang 553) reads all
three saloks headed `ਮਰਦਾਨਾ ੧` as Guru Nanak's, addressed to Mardana. Keep him as a voice, or show the
saloks under Guru Nanak?
- **Bhagat Surdas.** One line, with no pen-name. The roster follows the EoS and Sahib Singh: the shabad
headed `ਸਾਰੰਗ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ਸੂਰਦਾਸ` is Guru Arjan's. Confirm.
- **Raagmala** (Angs 1429–1430) has no author in the printed caption, and its authorship is contested
(EoS, Ragmala). The corpus files it under Guru Arjan Dev Ji, and no roster entry claims it.
- **Japji Sahib** has no `author` in today's corpus (Angs 1–8). It is listed as Guru Nanak's notable Bani;
the attribution repair in sggs-data assigns it.
- **Gurmukhi forms of the names** (`gurmukhi`) are editorial, in modern spelling (e.g. `ਭੱਟ ਕਲਸਹਾਰ ਜੀ`).
Approve or correct each one.

**Context.** Surdas, born Madan Mohan, is said to have been born in 1529 into a Brahmin family. He served Akbar as governor of Sandila, renounced the world, and died at Banaras. The Granth keeps one line of his, `ਛਾਡਿ ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਮੁਖਨ ਕੋ ਸੰਗੁ` (Sarang, Ang 1253). The shabad after it, headed `ਸਾਰੰਗ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ਸੂਰਦਾਸ`, is Guru Arjan's, written in response.
*Sources:* [EoS: SŪRDĀS](https://web.archive.org/web/2023/http://eos.learnpunjabi.org/SURDAS.html); [Darpan: Ang 1253: Sahib Singh's note: the single line is Surdas's; the next shabad is Mahala 5](https://www.gurugranthdarpan.net/1253.html)
**Where sources differ.** Only one line is his, and it carries no pen-name. The EoS and Sahib Singh agree that the following shabad is Guru Arjan's, though it names Surdas where the Gurus usually sign ਨਾਨਕ. This Surdas is distinct from the blind poet of the Sur Sagar; Sahib Singh notes that some scholars hold there were two Surdases. *([EoS: SŪRDĀS](https://web.archive.org/web/2023/http://eos.learnpunjabi.org/SURDAS.html); [Darpan: Ang 1253: Sahib Singh's note: the single line is Surdas's; the next shabad is Mahala 5](https://www.gurugranthdarpan.net/1253.html))*
**In the corpus today.** The corpus files his single line (Ang 1253, `ਛਾਡਿ ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਮੁਖਨ ਕੋ ਸੰਗੁ`) under Namdev; no heading or signature is printed with it, so the attribution is with a scholar for review.

| Pen-name (chhap) | none | — |
**Context.** Mardana was born in 1459 at Talwandi Rai Bhoe to a Mirasi family of hereditary minstrels. He grew up with Guru Nanak, was ten years his senior, and played the rabab as the Guru sang on all his travels. He died at Kartarpur in 1534.

**Where sources differ.** Scholars dispute the attribution. The EoS holds that one salok at Ang 553 is Mardana's and two are Guru Nanak's addressed to him. Sahib Singh (Darpan, Ang 553) holds that all three are Guru Nanak's, because the lines sign ਨਾਨਕਾ/ਨਾਨਕ, which Mardana could not use. Kept in the roster and flagged for the scholar. *([EoS: MARDĀNĀ, BHĀĪ (1459-1534)](https://web.archive.org/web/2023/http://eos.learnpunjabi.org/MARDANA%20BHAI%20%281459-1534%29.html); [Darpan: Ang 553: Sahib Singh's note on the three saloks headed ਮਰਦਾਨਾ ੧](https://www.gurugranthdarpan.net/0553.html))*
